Spending quality time with your children is crucial for their development and well-being. From playdough to swings, we got projects for all. Keep reading to discover five fun activities you can enjoy at home while spending quality time with your children.

Use this time to bond

Quality time creates a bond between you and your child, building a foundation of trust and love. Making crafts lets you understand your child’s unique personality while fostering a positive relationship.

You pass on important values and life skills by spending quality time with your children. It’ll also positively impact your child’s mental health and self-esteem. Remember, engaging with your children in meaningful ways is essential for their growth and happiness. So, let’s now check the 5 DIY activities we have planned for you and your little ones.

#1 - Homemade playdough

Making your own playdough can be fun and save you money. You’ll also be skipping many chemicals present in commercial playdough. Enjoy this affordable and educational activity with your children. Check below for a quick rundown on how to make this fun craft.

Mix 2 cups water, 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 2 tbsp cooking oil, 4 tsp cream of tartar, and food coloring. Add food coloring to water if you wish to color the dough. Then mix and slow cook until ingredients begin to form a ball. Next, knead until smooth and store in an airtight container.

#2 - Treasure hunt

Give your children something fun to do on a Saturday morning when you want to sleep in. This DIY consists of hiding a treasure in your own backyard and then drawing a map for it. To make it extra fun, draw the map and make a few copies for your children to color. Once the kids are done coloring, they can go into the backyard and search for the treasure. You can hide small toys, a gift card, a night out at the kids’ favorite restaurant, or anything that may bring them joy and simplify your life.

#3 - Finger puppets

Making finger puppets with your children can be a fun and creative activity that encourages imagination and storytelling. It also increases creativity, motor skills, communication skills, and emotional expression. So don’t miss out and show your kids the fun of finger puppets. You’ll need; felt, scissors, glue, markers or fabric paint, yarn, or string to make your finger puppets.

Start by cutting out the felt in the shape of the animals or characters you want to make. You can use templates or draw freehand. Then glue or sew the pieces of the felt together to make the puppet’s body. Use markers or fabric paint to decorate the puppet with details such as eyes, mouth, and clothing. Cut a small hole in the bottom of the puppet to fit a finger. Then tie a piece of yarn or string around the bottom of the puppet to create a neck or collar.

#4 - Twig planters

Making twig planters with your children is a fun and educational activity that teaches them about nature and the environment. You and your children will start by going outside to gather the twigs, so that’s the perfect time to share some knowledge about the importance of nature in everyone’s life.

To start, gather some twigs with your children from the park or your yard. You’ll also need pruning shears, rope, and a plastic pot. Use the pruning shears to cut the twigs to the desired length to cover the pot. Tie enough twigs to wrap around the pot and tie both ends together. There you have it. Now you just need to add your favorite plant or flower and display it. This fun activity will develop your children’s creativity while teaching them to appreciate nature.

#5 - Backyard swing

This quick and fun DIY project requires a tree. So if you have a nice tree with a big branch, then you are in luck. You can use an old tire or a flat piece of wood. This is an excellent activity for children because it’s very little work (for them) with a lot to gain (for them again).

All you need to do is cut two holes on each end of your wooden piece and make sure they’re centered. Run a thick rope through the holes, over the tree branch, and tie it at the end so it doesn’t move. Do this on the other side, and you’re done. To use the tire, run the rope a few times through it until it looks tight, then attach it to the tree.
